NACCOM would like to extend its congratulations to Lucy, Project Coordinator at Destitute Asylum Seekers Huddersfield (DASH), who was recently announced as the runner up in a national competition, Britain’s Best Volunteer. The competition, run by insurance company Markel, sought to highlight the work of community members across the country. It took nominations from members of the public and then chose five finalists, which were put to a public vote.

Despite being unwell and therefore unable to give the public vote a great deal of attention, Lucy was both surprised and pleased to be awarded the runner up prize, which included £250 for the organisation and an Apple Watch for herself. She says; ‘It’s really nice that I was nominated. I’m planning to sell the watch. With the proceeds I’ll take my long-suffering husband out to lunch and give the rest to DASH.’

It is hoped that the publicity from the event will result in greater funding and support for the organisation’s work in the long-term.
